I am a very big fan of analogies to get my points across and I am going to make another very big one right here and now. Imagine for one crazy moment that you attempted to do crossword puzzles for money. I know that you can win money with some of these crossword puzzles but imagine for one minute if you had to pay to do them and also if you couldn’t get any outside help and so essentially you were on your own. Clearly this would be a very demanding environment and also one where the relative difficulty of the crossword puzzles would differ greatly and have a huge impact.
Now keep with me on this because I am essentially talking about poker here as well. The crossword in the Times newspaper is significantly more difficult than in tabloids like the Daily Mirror for example or maybe some magazines. So you would be foolish to try and solve a very difficult crossword when you do not have the ability and you are also having to pay to solve it as well. Imagine if you had to pay $50 to solve a crossword puzzle and you won $100 when you solved it. Any person with a 50% strike rate of solving the puzzles would make a lot of money.
But if this puzzle was too difficult for someone else then their ratio would be far smaller and so they would be losing money. The answer then would be to attempt crosswords with lesser difficulty that also stood to win you less money. An easier $5 crossword that paid $10 if you completed it may be better suited to your abilities. When you do crosswords then you have to accept that there may be lots of words that you do not know the meaning of and the more words that you do not know the meaning of or if your command of words with missing letters isn’t strong then your chances of success will be less.
Some people use dictionaries to help them complete crosswords but this isn’t working on your understanding of words is it if all you do is look a word up without it sinking into your subconscious. This is clearly a case of looking but not seeing. Many people do this with poker, they look and listen but they do not see and hear which knocks on to them not learning in the way that they should. It really doesn’t matter how long you have studied poker, it is how much you have learned that is key.
This is why many of the young kids who are coming into the game are coming into it with their eyes and ears fully open. They are learning what they need to learn in a very short space of time and they are quantum leaping their understanding of poker. But you do need to have an honest self appraisal of your ability as a poker player because many people simply do not have what it takes to succeed at the middle limits or higher for a multitude of reasons.
